Top 60 Slogans for the Left & Right
And what the list of each says about the other, and our collective future
Every ideology ultimately boils down, tactically, to its soundbites.
The best soundbites are, in themselves, slogans. They are inspiring, commanding, and the synthesis of policy complexity to an urgent imperative.
If it can be simply conveyed, it motivates people and it challenges policymakers.
The public eschews complexity. It abhors detail and nuance. It wants pithy incisive clarity.
Now begins my long complex diatribe on short simplicity.
Policymakers regale in complexity, but usually only insofar as they can use it as a jungle to hide in when confronted by the public for inaction. Arcane policy details provide a kind of verbal camouflage for political sociopaths.
So political slogans, then, become the only point in which the two worlds meet: voters and their designated representatives. The slogans represent the collective consciousness expressed as a policy preference in this instant. Every slogan is part demand, part want, part angst. They capture everything all in one.
The book by Augusto Boal, “Legislative Theater” comes to mind.
The book outlines the process by which Boal developed a way to play-act social wrongs, so that legislative bodies might ultimately fix and remedy those wrongs. His thesis is that many of the day-to-day concerns that real people have are poorly-met needs by the political system.
Boal rightly contends that the real wrongs in society don’t even have a proper description, they aren’t understood, and the leadership is inherently out of touch with those problems.
The problem is that we cannot easily put these problems into words. Instead, we are left with political operators and special interests to develop these words, and more often than not they simply reflect the wants and desires of the wealthy patrons of the political parties. In essence, representative democracy has been hijacked by elite interests through the vehicle of fundraising, and the dollars that politicians and interest groups constantly chase to keep their operations afloat.
Who is actually listening to the real public?
The left is learning this better than the right, because the left is simply more serious about gaining power and using power than the right. The left understands it has to do this out of necessity. Once in power, however, they predictably don’t give a shit.
I think these lists reflect a certain intellectual dearth on the right, where too many talking heads on the right want the career path of Sean Hannity, and no one wants to actually develop winning and winnable ideas. The actual production, refinement, and proliferation of actual ideas on the right is non-existent. Even the few policy outlets designed to serve this function, places such as the American Legislative Exchange Council, have been shamelessly co-opted by donor and big business interests.
This situation keeps the political right stillborn as merely a reactionary movement to the existing, decaying, failing, neoliberal governance that is slowly morphing into race-based Maoist Communism.
And not only does the right lack the present slogans to foster effective movements, the right doesn’t even have the right mindset to speak the right slogans, if they were developed. If you notice the slogans on the left, they are directly beneficial to their base, often to the exclusion of others. They seek to consolidate power and reward their tribe. The slogans on the right, by contrast, are typically universalist and beneficial-to-all. The left wants to make millionaires out of trial lawyers and teachers, and the right wants to cut the capital gains taxes of left-wing billionaires.
The left wants to abort the children and offer them as a sacrifice to Satan, and the right wants to provide fair, good government, to those who want to publicly gather to offer their infant sacrifices.
The left has an enormous advantage with its command over colleges, culture, the media. That power helps them develop a greater range of policies that they can then use in politics to better advance their interests and get more power. That dynamic seems unlikely to change in the next generation.
The side that has the quantity and quality of political operators who can further develop and deploy these soundbites is the one that will continue to grow in power.
So with that in mind, here are 60 chatGPT-generated slogans for the left, and then 60 for the right.
